Mary's Short Velomobile Cranks
Mary Arneson showed the latest tweak on her Cab Bike velomobile. The 170 mm cranks were replaced with a set of 175mm Suntour XC Comp arms, shortened to 153 mm by Mark Stonich.
They are both left side cranks (ie. no chainring arms), which is fine here, since the chainring is inside the chassis tunnel rather than being attached to the right side crank.
Tonight was Mary's first ride with the short cranks, and she thought they stressed her knees noticeably less than the regular length cranks, something she is even more sensitive to now after tearing two cartilages in her knee a few months ago. They also give a little more room when pedaling and when standing up in the foot holes to walk the trike backwards. Because her heels won't go down as far they may also permit the foot holes to be covered over (with slit spandex fabric or Velcro attached stiff panels) for better aerodynamics and more warmth in winter.
I brought an arm that had been drilled and tapped, before the original pedal eye was sawn off. I wouldn't trust this arm if a pedal was used in the original hole, so I won't leave it. Mark
