2WD Delta Trike

Mark Stonich showed his 2WD delta trike which bears a strong resemblance to a tractor. John Deere Green paint with Yellow seat and Coroplast fenders. Designed to deal with ice & snow of a typical MN winter, the only real test so far has been a lap of Lake Nokomis on the water covered ice. Verdict: "Should work just fine on icy roads." 80% of the weight on rear wheels , if only one has traction, it gets all the power. Rear fenders need lateral support, but are very effective. Fender inner panels hanging below rear chains do a good job of keeping muck off chains.

Brakes are set up to allow brake steering on the rear. Using a pulley to activate the front cable, if either rear brake is applied the front (center) cable is only pulled half way. But, when both levers are pulled the front brake is also applied. A separate cable, operated by a shift lever, pulls just one side of the right rear V-brake against the rim, functioning as a parking brake. Rear rack is asymmetric to allow room for large basket on one side, or single saddlebag that ends up near centerline. Too wide for doors, so seat and handlebars drop flat, which allow it to be carried through doors sideways. Fork design allows any amount of rake, in this case 5.75". Frames's a little flexible, but only really noticeable when braking hard with one wheel. 55 pounds or so of "Road Hugging Weight".

Drivetrain must be pretty sturdy, since there was no damage due to riding it after an end bolt fell out, leaving one end of the jackshaft was unsupported. Design was way too complicated, about 100 custom pieces had to be made.

"If I was doin' this over again, I wouldn't. The money I saved using standard bike parts I already owned can't begin to justify the extra work. At minimum wage for all the hours I put in, I coulda took a cab. Next time single-side drive, disc brake hubs, much simpler frame layout"
